Today was the second day of the flute camp. Things are going very well, people seem to be excited and having a lot of fun. The most interesting thing was the reaction of a lady who at first didn't want to have anything to do with jazz. Tonight, as she was leaving she came up to Joe Cunliffe and said she was so excited, she figured out why she didn't like the blues, it was the flat seven. I have rarely seen anyone so excited. She couldn't wait to get back. This is really what I wanted to have happen.

Just found out that NetLogo4.0beta5 has a mathlink interface to Mathematica 6. Just started messing with it, will post some pdf's soon.

Today was the first day of the Adult Amateur Flute Camp. We held it at Columbia Baptist Church in Fall Church, Va. Joseph Cunliffe and Ellen Hinkle were the teachers. We had eight flutists with levels and experience ranging from early intermediate to almost professional level. I think everyone had a good time, and I think they are looking forward to a great week.

Here are some other thoughts on AdultAmateurMusic.

I think there is an unmet demand for adult amateur music programs, particularly for instrumentalists. A lot of people have played in high school and college bands and orchestras, and after leaving school have almost no opportunity to play with other people and not opportunities to set and achieve goals to grow and develop as a musician. The result is that people quit making music, and sometimes wistfully think about how much fun it was  and which they had kept it up. But the reality is that even if they had continued to practice, opportunities for the less than professionally qualified musician are few. This is a great shame.

It is a shame because music and the performance of music is one of the great pleasures of life.
It is a shame because as the schools cut back on music there are few left to defend it.
It is a shame because so much of modern culture is passive, spectators and performers.
It is a shame because a major part of human culture becomes neglected and relegated to children, and then only if it doesn't get in the way of learning how to make money.

I could go on and on. But I just want to add that I think musicians, professional musicians, need to wake up to the need to nurture adult amateur musicians. Otherwise there will be no people in concert halls and jazz clubs at recitals, and no one to encourage children to excel and develop as people and musicians. People only stay deeply committed to something if they actively engaged in it.

The camp seemed to be a great success. Everyone was very excited and wanted to get back together. Helen Smith turned out to be the star. She came in with a very anti-jazz attitude, she discovered a musical reason for not liking the blues and tried to avoid improvising solos. With encouragement, she did improvise and in fact made the last solo of the camp. She was so happy, and was talking about continuing to work on Jazz theory and improvisation. We had one casualty, Hyesuk Kong, she stayed for a couple of days and then disappeared. I sent her an email and found  that she felt over her head and was afraid the other players would resent her. I explained that was not the case, and encouraged her to come back, but got no reply. I feel that she should have talked to one of us rather than just leaving with no word, thus, I would not be inclined to give her a refund (she didn't ask).

Ellen's husband, Win, came on the last night with his string bass (he's a professional jazz player) and played along with the group, he and Joseph had a little spontaneous comedy thing going which was enjoyed by all.

Having the two approaches worked out very well too. We wound up working as a whole group, rather than in separate work shops as I had originally imagined. About half the time was devoted to Ellen's traditional stuff, and half to Joseph's. Ellen and Joseph participated as campers when they weren't leading. They turned out to be a great combination (mom and dad)!

We did not do the Saturday recital. Only two people were free Saturday morning and didn't want to do it if there were not more people around, which I can understand. I think having a weekend morning activity is pretty much a non-starter, people are just too busy.

I handed out comment forms, but have not yet processed them. I also got everyone to sign a photo release statement and took a bunch of photos on the last night. When I have sorted the photos and read the forms I send you a more complete final report and lessons learned.

We thought it would be fun to have a reunion at the Flute Fair for "past and future" alumni of the Camp, where we would get together and do the jazz thing and a straight thing. Also, there is interest in forming a Jazz Flute Choir. Joseph and I are exploring how to do that.

Mathematica6, is the latest version of a program that has been around for almost 20 years. I have always been excited by the possibilities that Mathematica presents, and this latest version adds much more power. I admit that it is fairly difficult to learn, particularly if you haven't had much training in Mathematics, not because it's use requires a high level of mathematical knowledge, but it is hard to appreciate the point of much of the program without a fair level of mathematical maturity. It also helps to have studied LISP or SCHEME, but not as much as one would think.

But what I think is really interesting is that Mathematica supercharges your brain. It allows one to perform calculations and symbolic transformations that are all but impossible for the unaided mind. I know that others have observed that advanced computation brings in interesting new possibilities in the way of doing mathematics, experimental mathematics for example, but I am interested in how it can transform the way of doing traditional mathematics.

Anyway, for a former mathematician, the possibilities are very exciting. Also, I can use it for almost anything. I can certainly do most of what is useful in Microsoft office, only better most of the time, and with virtual transparent portability between machines.

When I mention Mathematica to many of my colleagues I sometimes get a curious reaction: "I haven't tried Mathematica because it's too expensive, and I don't much like Wolfram." Bill Gates is the only other person I know that inspires more venom. Now granted, Wolfram seems to be pretty egotistical, and "A New Kind of Science" while interesting seems to make a lot of claims and sometimes seems to verge on a cult of personality. But so what. Whatever Wolfram's personal characteristics are, they do not prevent Mathematica from being a brilliant piece of software engineering. I agree it's pretty expensive, and I think that might be a mistake. I would prefer to see it as a huge open source project, or at least available for a much lower price, say $200.00. $2,700.00 seems a little excessive. Hardly represents marginal cost pricing. Anyway, I have a copy through my company for which I am very grateful, and when I retire, in the not too distant future, I will probably pony up whatever it takes to have the professional premier edition.

I have suffered from stage fright for many years. In the last few it has become much worse. There are times when I can barely hold my flute, and the air is completely out of control. It is a vicious cycle. And so I have often thought of just giving up. Of accepting the fact that playing is not for me. But that is not right, and it isn't how I really feel. So my only alternative is to fight against it and try to overcome.

The surgery helped. Ellen has helped. Zen has helped. Therapy and medication have helped, Xanax in particular. But a final solution and way forward is elusive. Moise says it is just a matter of time, patience, and intelligent work. And I suppose he is right. But now I am old and I don't feel like I have all that much time.

I have been reading, and recommend "Just Being at the Piano" by Mildred Portney Chase. It is a well written summary of a Zen like approach to performance. 

I am beginning to think that the way is not to worry so much about stage fright, but rather to worry performance, and not worry, so much, as view the problem as the problem of performance and the obstacles to it. This removes the problem from the ego and makes it more a technical matter. I have found that meditation, in particular with breathing exercises while holding the flute and then playing a very relaxed B, put the flute down and continue the meditation and breathing, repeat a random times, and sometimes initiate the action, but do not complete it. (Like Alexancer Technique Inhibition exercises) I'm still working at this, but it has had a major effect.

Ever since //Mathematic//6 came out, //Mathematica// has become my default entertainment. But I've been thinking that I need to modify the way I do mathematics. I think it would be better, if I could teach myself to do mathematics directly in //Mathematica// rather than working on paper and then transfering the ideas. I really want to get to the paperless office.

I like the idea of venture altruism. Charles Stross talks about it in "Accelerando" and Cory Doctorow talks about it in "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom".

I am interested in Venture Altruism because I'm lazy. I am more interested in new ideas and solving problems than I am in sticking to one problem and bringing it to fruition. I know, that is despicable and the mark of an inferior mind. Ok. Anyway, I don't like detail work, I don't like administration, I don't like paying bills, or any ot that sort of stuff. So what can I do?

I'm good at learning, understanding, and synthesizing information. I have almost unlimited interests. And I can usually come up with a novel solution to almost any problem. (Still haven't solved the Riemann Hypothesis, too much work, unless I get lucky.)

I am an intellectual tourist. Which may have certain uses, I don't know. But I am trying to find a way to make this a useful thing. Hence Venture Altruism.
